TRAVELING WITH THE RESORT 2012 COLLECTIONS

June 14, 2011

With all the Resort 2012 shows rolling around, it got us to start thinking about destinations. Resort collections aim at the beginning part of the new year when most people start thinking about an early vacation from Winter climates. Naturally the clothes reflect the carefree and relaxed vibe. On top of that, due to the practicality of the offerings,  this part of the fashion calendar has been gaining more and more attention from both designers and retailers. Not only are there more designers joining the schedule, but also the amount of looks and the quality and diversity of each collection has seen a significant increase.

To illustrate the importance of this season, Michael Kors claims Resort as the most important part of the whole year for his brand. As for retailers such as Saks, Neimans, Barneys…etc, pre-collections such as Resort or pre-fall often stay the longest on sales floor thus reaching more customers. As far as inspirations, most designers traditionally envision their customers traveling to luxurious resort type locations such as St. Tropez or Antibes, but in recent seasons we begin to see more diverse locales being explored which explains the increasingly diverse styles being offered for Resort. With the current season being presented, we picked out 5 collections that we love and tell you where we think these women are heading for their own vacation.

THE ROW: Portofino on the Italian Riviera

The Olsen Twins created a collection perfect for a woman who has to finish up business in Rome or Milan and then head to the Italian Riviera to relax in the seaside town of Portofino. Crisp tailored suits worthy for the Italian occasion, plus comfortable chunky knit sweaters or a mink striped cardigan layered over button downs and dresses make this collection perfect for the women whose vacation is half work and half play.

MISSONI: Palma de Maljorca – Majorca, Spain

This perfectly beach ready collection features cardigans and long flowy skirts coupled with straw hats and maxi dresses. Together with the bright aqua colors such as turquoise, pink and royal purple, the girl who’s heading to the beach of Majorca has everything she needs to relax and enjoy herself.

MAX AZRIA: New York City, NY

For the girl who doesn’t necessarily gravitate toward resort towns, Max Azria is on hand to make sure she’s ready to hit the big city to explore the beauty of a metropolis. The collection boast a perfect blend of femininity and athleticism suitable for a girl on the go exploring art galleries, walking around different neighborhoods, and enjoying a night out in the city that never sleeps.

MICHAEL KORS:  Melbourne and Gold Coast, Australia

Gold Coast

Melbourne

Having been to Australia recently, Michael Kors was so inspired that clearly he wants all of his customers to take a trip down under. The collection has scuba-inspired dresses that are chic enough to be worn around the city, plus the neon yellow and pink palette matches perfectly with the energy of the Australian summer. The Michael Kors girl can explore Melbourne in sexy day dresses and then head over to the Gold Coast to take up surfing lessons in her fun sporty 2-pieces.

PREEN: Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto

Tokyo

Another collection inspired by a specific destination, Preen’s Resort 2012 collection brings their customers to Japan. Sheath dresses screen printed with Zen Japanese paintings are perfect for strolling around Kyoto visiting historical temples and monuments. While the more energetic, yet still chic and respectful separates are perfect for the high-octane energy of Tokyo. The designers kept it fun by using leopard prints and made separates that’re chic enough to stand up to Tokyo’s finest.
