ARMANI SETS THE DIGITAL TONE FOR 2012

Ever since Giorgio Armani presented his Lady Gaga/Tron inspired futuristic Spring 2011 couture show, there was only one thing that stuck to our mind – the wickedly cool liquidmetal fabric used throughout the whole show.

Since then, this particular aesthetic has shown up on major red-carpet appearances as well as popping up in a few Fall 2011 collections. This look is thoroughly futuristic and screams technology. And because up until now, the digital influence as a trend has only been slowly developing, this liquidmetal fabric trend will surely jumpstart and push forward “The Digital Influence” as a macro-trend for the 2012 collections.

The emergence of this special fabric effect is a tell-tale sign of designers experimenting with the digital look. Mr. Armani’s commitment to this futuristic look has prompted designers such as Mugler, Etro, Nicole Fahri and Ohne Titel to experiment with this type of exaggerated sheen to different results.

Technically speaking, in order to achieve this type of glossy metallic effect, nylon is usually fused with silk through heat technology; and in Armani’s case, it was a nylon fused organza which retains softness and provides structure. The best part about this fabric is that it is equal part futuristic and feminine, thanks to the fluidity and silky characteristic of the hand.

This is a promising first step toward a full-blown digital trend. The futuristic look such as one of Gareth Pugh and now also Armani requires time to be embraced by a wider range of designers and retailers. But with celebrity taking a chance on this look and embracing it in major red-carpets and TV shows,  the aesthetic will soon be accepted and prompt other brands to explore digitalization and futurism in other manners, thus ushering “The Digital Influence” into a full-blown macro-trend.

And moving forward toward 2012, we can expect the general mood to be icy and geometric, the color palette will be cool and the lines will be fluid. Fabric will be digitally manufactured achieving new texture and precision in cuts and silhouettes.

"The Digital Influence"

We foresee many designers being inspired by technological possibilities. On top of which, new advancements in fabrications are achieved on a weekly basis and holograms and special effects are becoming more attractive as an exciting presentation tool. The digital influence will certainly see its impact thoroughly from inspiration, to fabrication, and even to presentation of many more 2012 collections.
