OPENING CEREMONY USES NEOPRENE & RUBBER FOR FASHION

November 17, 2010

Today marks the launch of Opening Ceremony’s collaboration with Disney Consumer Products on a special capsule collection inspired by the new Walt Disney Pictures film, TRON: Legacy. Developing collections in conjunction with movies is becoming a regular thing for the folks over at Opening Ceremony.  Last year, they produced a collection for Spike Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things Are”, which focused on fake fuzzy fur dresses, vests and accessories.  I’m not sure how well this collection did at retail (as I remember seeing alot of it on sale), but I do know that not long after their collection debuted in the spring, Mr Lagerfeld showed his Fall 2010 Chanel collection which consisted entirely of fake fur and was shown within a huge ice sculpture.  And I’m not sure if you have noticed, but there are several young kids roaming around in fuzzy fake fur hats.  Connection?  I think so.

So whenever Opening Ceremony does anything, I take notice as they are ALWAYS ahead of the curve. As far as Im concerned, if you are ahead of Karl, you are doing something really, really right.

Even though I am not all that excited about the TRON movie in particular, I did get excited when I saw these neoprene shoes that they made for this collection.  I think they are genius:  modern, comfortable, wearable and unique.  All the things I love.

And I love their off-beat use of neoprene and rubber within the context of fashion.  We haven’t really seen this done right before.  Sure Nicolas Ghesquière has experimented with these textiles at Balenciaga, but his products were far too out of reach for most.

The colors of the collection are all on trend for Spring and happen to be the focus colors in the movie.  Love the orange and the yellow and the combination with the bright blue feels very fresh.

To me this jacket is what a high-fashion snow skier would wear down the mountain this winter.  Probably with some super white snow boots to keep the Mondrian color-block look in tact.

The cropped neoprene pants are fantastic and will be great for Spring with tribal prints and modern platform sandals.

Accessories in collaboration with ThreeASFOUR accompany the collection.

The collection, which ranges from $230 for Bodice Tanks to $575 for Moto Jackets, will be available at Opening Ceremony New York, Los Angeles, and Japan; Colette in Paris; and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong today, November 17th.
