TREND ALERT: FALL 2010 – POLKADOTS and MOONBEAMS

July 9, 2010

With the new wave of Feminine Sensuality arising in Womenswear, it’s no wonder polka dots are making their comeback.  Dolce and Gabbana were the first to show them on the Fall runways as the leader in Fall’s Ode to the Woman.  Paired with leopard prints and lace, Feminine references abound in their collection creating beautiful pairings that any lady would be happy to don.

The freshest take for Fall is to pair them with leopard prints in tailored silhouettes referencing 50’s Classics shapes.

Eva Mendes channels Sophia Loren in July’s issue of W magazine and exemplifies what this new Femininity is all about:

A house known for their love of polka dots, Emanuel Ungaro’s Fall collection also contributed to this trend.

The theme continued into Resort 2011, with several designers following suit on this feminine trend. From Giorgio Armani to Miu Miu and Moschino, polka dots definitely had their place in the Resort collections.  One can predict more to come for Spring 2011, especially in the Junior market where girly prints reign supreme.

Miu Miu’s whimsical take on the trend feels very trend right for Spring mixing cheeky apple prints with kelly green, heart details and tons of accessories.  You can always count on Miu Miu to do things their own way, and this collection says a lot about what to expect for Spring 2011:

  • 70’s references in prints and silhouettes
  • Flared/cuffed trousers
  • Skirt suits/mid- calf skirt lengths
  • Kelly green as a dominant color
  • Accessories:  multiple double armed bracelets

Take a look at a few Trend setters already sporting this look on the streets this summer:

I love this girl’s interpretation pairing polka dots with Camel and a creme blazer-summer sophistication at it’s finest.

Loving Mary Kate’s combination of transparency, polka dot tap shorts, leopard and camel- she is already on the Fall Fashion brigade.

I expect polka dots to make their mark this Fall in all the magazines and to have it’s moment in the Style Files of Fall 2010.  However, I don’t expect for it to really register with the masses until Spring 2011.  For those of you that thrive on being the first on a trend, I’d recommend hitting up your favorite vintage store or flea market to find a great blouse or short. The key is finding something that you  can wear this summer that will transition easily into your Fall wardrobe.
