MUST WATCH: OSCAR DE LA RENTA’S HANDMADE PAPER HATS

July 6, 2011

Before moving onto Couture, I want to share one more thing about the past Resort season. One of my favorite shows was Oscar de la Renta’s. I love when fashion incorporates art references and ODLR’s resort collection was full of Picasso references with prints inspired by early 20th century Cubism. It was beautiful and made an old art reference look fresh and it was overall quintessential ODLR!

To complement the looks, the designer added structural paper hats to punctuate the geometry and lines created by the print.  Mr. de la Renta said after the show that he thought the hats “gave the clothes proportions” and “we had a good time doing them in the studio”. Which brings us to this video posted by #OscarPRGirl on their tumblr blog demonstrating how the hats were made. I just have to share this tidbit before we moved onto talking about Couture, though when you think about it, these handmade hats have a certain couture appeal to them, don’t you think?

I have to agree with Mr. de la Renta, those hats definitely completed the collection, I love them!!

And here is a slideshow of a few looks that we loved, those prints were truly a piece of art.
