ACCESSORIES TREND ALERT: GYPSY HEADGEAR
With many of the Fall runways focusing on a Bohemian Gypsy style, it is no wonder that jeweled and beaded headgear is emerging as a hot new accessory trend. What started several seasons back as Bohemian leather and beaded headbands has now developed into more ornate jeweled headgear using crystals, mixed metals and large stones. This new trend channels the past mixing Egyptian references with Russian folkloric details and modern day Bohemia.
A few designers featured headgear on their Fall 2010 runways including Alexandre Herchcovitch and Jasmine Di Milo.
Alexandre’s collection had Russian references and his headgear was made of mixed large gold chains with beading placed over embroidered scarves.
Jasmine Di Milo’s headpieces complimented the Gypsy luxe feel of her collection which included brocade velvets, transparency and intricate beading.
Headgear has also been popping up on music industry leaders Lady Gaga and M.I.A.
Lady Gaga sported Erickson Beamon’s Swarovski crystal encrusted helmet on an interview with CNN in February.
And M.I.A. recently donned gold headgear in a spread in GQ’s July issue.
Accessory designers take note, Headgear will be making its mark for 2011 as we expect for lots of headgear to appear in editorials throughout the Fall season. Erickson Beamon will most likely have some competition as more designers take note of this emerging trend.
