TOP FALL 2010 TRENDS: #3 FOX FUR

June 10, 2010

Fur has made an even bigger comeback this Fall than it did last year. The biggest impact was seen in fur coats, but Fur was also used in vests, as a trim on jackets and made a big impact used on accessories such as handbags and shoes.  Large fur hats were seen on the runways as well as on the streets of Paris and London. Designers such as Michael Kors, Lanvin, Chloe, Valentino and Kenzo all used fur within their collections.

Chanel made a huge statement with fake fur, creating dresses and skirts and coats to tell his story of Fall’s Fur Warrior.  This trend was first seen this past fall when Opening Ceremony collaborated with Spike Jonze to create a capsule collection based on the release of the movie “Where the Wild Things Are”. The collection was composed of fake mongolian fur chubby coats, skirts and a-line dresses all resembling the likes of the make-believe “wild things” in the movie.  The line did not do so well at retail as I don’t think the customer quite understood it.  I imagine now that Karl has done it, the fashion forward will regret that they didn’t latch on sooner.

Within the fur trend, there is one standout to grasp that will dominate at retail this Fall which is FOX FUR.  This type of fur was used in many of the dominant trends for Fall:  Military, Classicism, Gypsy Luxe, Modern Warrior and Utilitarian.  Examples of this trend are shown below.

While these pieces are beautiful, it saddens me to see our sweet foxy friends killed to adorn the rich. Foxes are so magical, intuitive, curious., playful…..it’s a bummer that our fashion trends equal death to the friendly foxes. Good for Chanel for keeping it real….and fake. Why kill when you can just fake it?!
